Foul Speech is a Sign of the Last Days
"as it was in the days of Lot" Luke 17:28

The Bible indicates that one of the sins of Sodom was that of impure speech.

"And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned [them] with an overthrow, making [them] an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly; And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:" 2 Peter 2:7-8

This sin is very prevalent today. Outright cursing and swearing can be heard as if it was common speech in the business world, on tv, in the cities, and even in the small towns and country places. Slang terms, "Gosh" "Golly" "Gee Whiz" and many others that take God's name in vain can be commonly heard even among the professed followers of God.

Swearing is Proof of the Great Controversy between God and Satan
Very often people who say that God doesn't exist use His name in vain expressions. Their very use of God's name in a derogatory manner contradicts their own stated beliefs and proves the existence of God and the Devil. The Devil has so deceived people who say such things that they don't realize that he is the one putting it in their hearts and minds to break God's commandments in their speech.

A Species of Swearing
"But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil." Matthew 5:37

Leaders in the highest political offices often swear in public with no thought that they are even doing anything wrong. Today, impure speech is so prevalent that it has greatly affected the followers of God and can be heard among those who say believe in and are preparing for the soon return of Jesus.

Using God's Name in Vain is a Sin
"Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain." Exodus 20:7

The third commandment explicity declares that using God's name casually is a sin. Often times, well meaning people pray to God in a way that is not appropriate, they use His name over and over again in their prayers. But God instructs us how to pray in the Bible, we have the example of the Lord's prayer, as well as the prayers of prophets, and the injunction to not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. (Matthew 6:7-13)

In times of ignorance, God overlooks these things, but now wants men everywhere to repent and be ready for His soon return. (Acts 17:30)

Only those with Pure Speech Will be Rewarded with Heaven
"For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works." Matthew 16:27

In the book of Revelation there is a description of the people who will be ready to meet God when He comes. The Bible record indicates that they will not be swearing or using God's name in vain. "And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God." Revelation 14:6

The Remedy, God can Help us Speak New Words
A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. Mathew 12:35-37

Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me [with thy] free spirit. [Then] will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. Psalm 51:9-13

For this [is] the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. Hebrews 8:10-12
